Homework, part 2

The homework is continued …
Détente (French for relaxing or easing) – this term has been used since the early 70s in international politics. It describes a situation where “previously hostile nations not involved in involved in an open war de-escalate tensions through diplomacy and confidence-building measures.” Mostly, Détente was used to describe the politics and reduce the tension between the U.S. and the Soviet Union during the cold war (1945-1989, especially: 1960-80s).
Abu Ghraib – was the place in Iraq where former ruler Saddam Hussein killed and incarcerated political dissidents. During the Iraq war, Abu Ghraib became a prison for the American forces after Hussein’s fall. The U.S. military was accused of using Abu Ghraib to torture and abuse the prisoners.

In baseball, the term “Shot heard ‘round the world” describes the home run hit by Bobby Thomson (outfielder for the New York Giants) which was pitched by Ralph Branca. In 1951, the giants won the national league pennant because of this hit, and a reporter described this happening as “the giants win the pennant.”
